Sankofa Video and Books, in partnership with Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Washington, DC, presents Kwame Alexander, a New York Times bestseller and Newbery Medal Winning author.
Kwame Alexander will give a lively, interactive presentation from the author's young adult fiction literature. Kwame relates to young people through stories that encourage them to be avid readers AND writers!
Baba Bomani will open with a performance of tracks from new album “Baba Got BARS” and lead young people in creative writing exercises from his BARS curriculum. (More information about Baba Bomani at babagotbars.com)

The Carter G. Woodson Academy of Black Studies
is Dunbar High School's newest academy. The Academy deepens students' understanding of the beauty and resilience of the Black Diaspora while nurturing, cultivating and empowering students to be critical thinkers through reading, writing, discourse and creative expression.
Sankofa Video and Bookstore (SVB), founded in 1997 by filmmaking couple, Haile and Shirikiana Gerima, specializes in books and videos about people of African descent around the world, including the largest black children's book collection in the area. SVB has earned a reputation over the years as a gathering place for professional and fledgling authors, poets, musicians and other artists to present and discuss their work with engaging audiences.
This ticket level is for a single admission to event.
This ticket level includes admission for one, plus your choice of a copy of one of these pre-paid book titles: Crossover, Rebound, Booked.
Because you pre-purchased the book, you can pick it up at will-call and avoid the purchasing line.

Is there parking?
Yes, limited street parking is available.
What are the reasons I should arrive early?
Dunbar High School requires all visitors to clear security, so plan a few minutes for this process.
Books will be available for purchase. Buying yours in advance of the program will allow you to go directly to the signing line after the event.
Seating is first-come-first-served.
Where is the closest Metro Station?
Mount Vernon Square (yellow and green line) and NoMa (red line). Both are under a 10 minute walk.
Can I take pictures with Kwame Alexander?
No. There will be no time set aside for taking pictures.
Will Mr. Alexander be signing books at the event?
Yes, he will be signing directly after his presentation. We suggest you arrive at the event early to purchase a book or pick up your pre-purchased book (included in $20 ticket) so you can get directly in the booksigning line when event is over.
How do I get my book signed?
Mr. Alexander will be signing books purchased at event. You may also bring a book puchased at Sankofa Bookstore accompanied with receipt.Books without this receipt will not be signed. We suggest you arrive early to purchase a book or pick up your pre-purchased book (included in $20 ticket) so you can get directly in line for signing.
I have a copy of Kwame Alexander's book. Can I bring it to be signed?
No. Only books purchased from Sankofa Video and Books at the event or in advance at our store accompanied with a receipt will be signed by Mr. Alexander.
What exactly do I get the $20 ticket?
When you buy the $20 ticket, you are receiving admission for one and a copy of one of these pre-paid book titles: Crossover, Rebound, Booked. Because you pre-purchased the book, you can pick it up at will-call and avoid the purchasing line.
If I cannot attend the event but I want to support the Academy of Black Studies, can I make a donation?
Yes. Please make your tax-deductible donation HERE, via the Dunbar High School Alumni Association website. In the tribute section of your donation, please write these words:"CGW Academy of Black Studies."
Can I purchase Mr. Alexander's book in advance at Sankofa Bookstore and bring to the event to be signed?
Yes, you may bring a book purchased in advance at Sankofa Video and Books, 2714 Georgia Ave, NW, Washington, DC, but you must bring the receipt.
Can I buy Mr. Alexander's books at this event?
Yes, books will be sold on site. Please arrive early to avoid lines.
When do doors open? How early can I arrive?
Doors open at 2:30pm, event begins at 3:30pm. Event is expected to last no later than 5:30pm.
Can I use my credit card to purchase book(s) on site?
Yes, we take all major credit cards.
